Process Development

Technology Assessment – Evaluate current state of technology and advise on path to commercialization, including experience-based input on minimizing capital and operating costs, while expediting timelines.

Process Scale-up – Partner with engineers and scientists to evaluate current state of technology, develop strategy to focus on integration of unit operations and generate data required for process design. Experience re-focusing discovery efforts to provide a more efficient process deployment.

Capital Cost Estimating – Development of early phase concept-level capital cost estimates, through more detailed capital cost estimates to support funding and project finance. Significant expertise in working with early-stage processes and strategic advice on impacts to ultimate project capital cost.

Techno-Economic Modeling – Utilize over 30 years experience in designing, building and operating process facilities to develop techno-economic models and projections that reflect a balance of innovation and reality.

Process Design

Site Selection and Due Diligence – Utilize proven approach to evaluate sites to selection of the best overall mix of capital and operating costs. Ability to interface as-needed with utilities, developers, regulatory agencies, government officials and labor unions.

Equipment Specification and Procurement – Ability to work directly with technical staff to identify key selection criteria and generate specifications for vendor bidding process and contract negotiations.

Detailed Design – Robust experience managing detailed design of large, complex process facilities, including supervising civil, mechanical, process, structural, electrical and instrumentation disciplines.

Project Execution

EPCM Selection and Contracting – Seasoned background in successfully negotiating broad range of project execution strategies including design-build, EPC and EPCM.

Project Management – Manage project from concept through commercial operation. Stages include process development, site selection, detailed design, construction oversight, commissioning, startup and staffing of the facility.

Commissioning and Startup – Development of commissioning and startup strategy, including scheduling and staffing approaches. Ability to provide experience and leadership for startup team and lead commissioning efforts.

Performance Testing – Develop and negotiate lender approved performance test plan to demonstrate performance against approved proforma.


Successful history in all forms of venture and project fundraising within the advanced bioeconomy, including equity, project finance and federal loan guarantees. Regularly acted as technical voice for companies during fundraising efforts.

Engineering Leadership

Act as drop-in head of engineering, providing strategic leadership and technical direction to company engineering and research staff as they work through process development and into project delivery. Typically begins on a part-time or as needed-basis, with increased participation during project delivery and start-up.
