Mark Warner, P.E.

Mark Warner has more than a decade of senior engineering and executive operational leadership experience within the advanced bioeconomy. He has the unique ability to actively engineer and manage, proving successful in nearly half a billion dollars of commercialization projects. Mark delivers support beginning at the bench level, progressing through pilot and demonstration stages, culminating in the construction, startup and operation of commercial facilities. He has worked for four different companies that have held the number one spot on the biofuels digest top 50 Hottest Companies list. Mark has been selected as one of the Top 100 People in Bioenergy for multiple years.

2015 – Present, Founder, Warner Advisors LLC – Sacramento, CA

Provides consulting services and acts in interim engineering leadership roles for advanced bioeconomy clients in process development, process design, project execution, fundraising support and engineering leadership.

2014 – 2015, Chief Engineering Officer, Impossible Foods – Redwood City, CA

Responsible for deploying Impossible Foods innovative technology. Worked to develop a new generation of meats and cheeses made entirely from plants, with the mission is to give people the great taste and nutritional benefits of foods that come from animals without the negative health and environmental impact.

  • Managed process development, process engineering and pilot plant operations in development of innovative food process to make indistinguishable meat substitutes.
  • Led site selection, engineering evaluation and capital cost estimate generation of demonstration facility sites.
  • Provided significant leadership and insight into commercialization strategy, timelines and approach.
  • Managed implementation of GMP and food safety enhancement, to meet emerging federal regulations and provide a more robust operation.

2011 – 2014, Sr. Vice President of Engineering, Solazyme – S. San Francisco, CA

Accountable for engineering and manufacturing for leading industrial algal biotechnology company. Responsible for world-wide deployment of technology and management of company owned manufacturing facility. Successfully built and expanded both engineering and manufacturing organizations by over 100% in 18 months to meet company’s rapid growth requirements. Managed portfolio of $200 million of commercialization projects:

  • Greenfield facility in Brazil partnered with Bunge. $150 million new generation aerobic fermentation facility completed within 24 months from board approval and within budget of original project scope.
  • $10 million retrofit project with ADM in Clinton, Iowa and American Natural Soy in Galva, Iowa. Conducted initial due diligence of ADM facility and negotiations of contractual structure.
  • Managed $16 million retrofit of company owned facility in Peoria, Illinois under US DOE grant program. Served as Principal Investigator.
  • Led effort to successfully retrofit Peoria facility to make food products within 90 days of unexpected breakup of joint venture with Roquette.
  • Responsible for company manufacturing operations in Peoria, Illinois including 35 full time staff and $12 million annual operating budget. Facility serves as dual use demonstration facility for Solazyme’s tailored oil technology and commercial manufacturing facility for algal food products.

2008 – 2011 Sr. Vice President Process Industries, Harris Group – Seattle, WA

Business unit leader of Process Industries Division for leading engineering firm, responsible for conversion of biomass to fuel, fiber and chemicals. Recognized leader in the area of renewable energy and biotechnology. Clients included many of the top biofuel and biochemical companies. Accomplishments included:

  • Management and technical responsibility for billions of dollars of industry-leading commercialization projects including cellulosic ethanol, micro-algae, macro-algae, biomass power, carbon sequestration and biomass gasification. Involved in process development, front end loading (FEL) detailed design efforts.
  • Actively led successful grant and loan guarantee efforts for largest winners in the biofuels space. Projects included Sapphire Energy, Coskata and Ineos Bio/NPE.
  • Expert in the area of industrial biotechnology commercialization including site selection, facility development, permitting, FEL, detailed design, construction and operational deployment. Significant international experience.
  • Engineer in responsible charge for corporate headquarters.

2006 -2008 Vice President of Engineering, Imperium Renewables – Seattle, WA

Senior corporate officer responsible for technology, engineering and construction of biodiesel production facilities for renewable energy start-up. Technical voice of the company to industry analysts, banks and venture capitalists during successful equity and project-finance debt fundraising that secured over $200 million in funding. Developed state of the art biofuel production technology and commercialized as follows:

  • Grays Harbor Facility ($85 million) – largest biodiesel production facility constructed in the US; permitted, designed and constructed in 14 months. Hawaii Facility ($105 million) – successfully received all major pre-construction permits and received all approvals to break ground within 75 days if submitting permit applications.
  • Managed engineering team that developed aviation biofuels process and retrofit existing pilot plant facility to generate aviation biofuel that was used in first commercial flight by Virgin Atlantic in February of 2008.
  • Project development for facilities in Argentina, Europe and Asia, including site selection and governmental agency interface.
  • Successfully built engineering team from 3 up to 11 within 1 year to meet rapid growth and deployments goals of the company.

2001 – 2006 Vice President of Operations, Weston Solutions – Seattle, WA

Operational and business oversight for consulting engineering and construction offices in Seattle, Alaska, California and India, with revenues in excess of 20 million dollars per year and 120 employees. Recruited to improve performance of a region with very poor financial history. Highest overall rating on Gallup employee survey among all Weston management. Results include improvement from –20% net income before taxes (NIBT) in 2000 to +15% NIBT in 2004, including a 100% revenue growth and diversification of client base.

1999 – 2001 Principal, ENSR International – Redmond, WA

Dual role managing local consulting group and regional responsibilities for facilities engineering practice in the Western US. Work included concept development, process design and permitting for environmental related projects. Significantly grew consulting practice to highest profitability group within ENSR, producing 31% NIBT and expanding sales. Highest first year sales within ENSR organization.

1993 – 1999 Multiple Assignments, Philip Services – Renton, WA

Acted in a variety of functions for a large multinational waste services company including:

  • Director, Engineering and Regulatory Affairs – Responsible for engineering and regulatory compliance/permitting for large company division. Sites included 11 permitted treatment facilities and 25 industrial service locations located in the Western US, Canada, Mexico and the Pacific. Supported permitting and construction of large design, build, operate (DBO) water treatment system.
  • Plant Manager – Responsibility for managing company’s flagship treatment facility, which included a 30 million dollar per year revenue base and 50 employees. Accomplishments included successful negotiation of contentious union labor contract and resolution of concerns with the local community.

1985 – 1993 Multiple Assignment , Rhodia – Seattle, WA and Butte, MT

  • Maintenance Manager – Managed maintenance for large chemical complex (Butte, MT) producing food grade chemicals. Responsibility included 20 million dollar per year annual budget, 80 union craft employees and 13 million dollars per year utility contract.
  • Operations Superintendent – Responsible for day-to-day operations of intermediate chemicals facility (Seattle, WA), producing pharmaceutical chemicals. Accountability included 45 employees and 7 million dollar annual budget. Plant was named Vendor of the Year by Merck for outstanding product quality and customer service.
